Frank pulled the van into the dimly lit, rundown West Side Garage.

Strange place for an interview, he thought, parking in the rear and checking his watch. It was 6:30 exactly.

By 6:45 P.M., Cindy had still not shown up. As Frank got out of the van to stretch his legs, a taxi entered the garage and pulled up to him. Cindy Langly was in the backseat.

"Hi," Frank said as Cindy rolled down the window.

"Glad you could make it." Cindy stepped out of the cab and looked around as if to make sure they were alone. "Look, Frank. I won't beat around the bush," she said. "I've got Mort just about where I want him, but I need one more story to finish him off." She smiled. "And you can help me get it."

"Why do you want to 'finish him off'?" Frank asked.

"Because he deserves it," Cindy said bitterly. "He's built his fortunes on a lot of people's backs. Look what he's doing to Lisa Summer. Holding her hostage to a contract that could ruin her career."

"Maybe there's another reason," Frank said. "Maybe you're out to get Mort because he fired you."

"Yes, he fired me," Cindy admitted. "I was the best writer he ever had. Accused me of giving away his precious trade secrets. But this isn't about me. I want to stop him from hurting any more people. Are you interested in helping me?"

"I'm listening," Frank said, wanting to keep her talking.

"Good. I need to know everything that goes on on the set of Total Annihilation," Cindy said. "I've already got the office and house covered. So what do you say? Will you cover the set for me?"

"What's in it for me?" Frank asked, playing along.

Cindy rubbed her thumb and fingers together in a gesture that meant money. "Plenty," she said with a grin.

Cindy was about to say more when a noise made her jump and look over her shoulder. Frank heard it, too. It was coming from the other end of the garage, and it sounded like a chain rattling, Frank thought.

As Frank peered through the dim light in the direction of the sound, Cindy got back into the taxi. Stepping hard on the gas, the driver peeled out, heading straight for the exit and leaving Frank alone.

Frank heard the rattling sound again. Then three tough-looking guys emerged from the shadows, heading right toward Frank. One was carrying a long, thick chain that trailed noisily on the cement floor.

Another carried a metal pipe. As he came closer, he slapped the pipe against the palm of his hand and gave Frank a cold-blooded smile.
